Minsone Taung Wildlife Sanctuary

Minsone Taung
MST is home to the star tortoise ( Geochelone platynota )endemic to Myanmar. The tortoise is predominately distributed in the dry zone of central Myanmar , with a high concentration at MST . The star tortoise sports a beautiful yellow star pattern against a back ground of brown on its carapace. It is of medium size , with a 28 cm shell , and is a favorite among turtle fanciers . It is so popular , in fact , that until a vigilant program was instigated to stop the process , smugglers illegally shipped the star tortoise out of the country by the hundred .
This illegal activity , along with the turtle’s appeal to villagers as a food source . nearly extinguished this rare species.

MST staff closely monitor a recently constructed tortoise breeding enclosure , planted with native flora & enhanced with artificial shelters and water holes that mimic those found in nature. The breeding program had its first successful hatch last winter , producing a fine baby tortoise that is the first step to replenishing the species population in the wild .
The park , over 141 hectares of native frees had been planted in a reforestation program. Planting will continue until the area is returned to its original state. Area villagers participate
In the regreeing efforts.
